This is a one year position. Start date is scheduled for mid-June but can be altered to fit the needs of the right individual.
We are a 4 doctor practice, one office manager, receptionist, 6 veterinary technicians and stall / maintenance help. We have recently expanded the hospital with a new building. We have two large indoor treatment /diagnostic rooms with stocks, two sets of outdoor stocks, 2 ICU stalls, 13 open air covered stalls, and large turnout area. Desert Pines Equine Center strives to keep the practice progressive with technology including, digital radiography, digital ultrasound, IRAP, shock wave, powerfloats, endoscopy, arthroscopy, etc.
Goals for our intern:
This opportunity will prepare a new veterinarian for future employment within a high quality equine private practice. The successful applicant will desire a broad base of experience in equine medicine and surgery ranging from preventative medicine of backyard ponies to referral lameness of the elite athlete.
Expectations for the internship year are as follows:
Approximately 40% ambulatory and 60% in-house cases with a wide variety of cases.
Highest quality mentorship will be given, including; structured doctors meetings, Case rounds, Journal club and around the clock availability for questions or a helping hand.
Close oversight by associates for quality medicine but never overbearing. As confidence and proficiency increase, so does independence.
The intern will gain skill and aptitude in the following areas: Broad base of internal medicine cases, assisting in routine and emergency surgeries, theriogenology, neonatology, lameness diagnostics and therapy, pre-purchase examinations, dentistry and preventative medicine.
Become comfortable and proficient with advanced diagnostics and treatments
Contribution to emergency duty with the other associates after an initial introduction to the hospital, its protocols and trial period where the intern will “shadow” an associate veterinarian until sufficient confidence is gained.
$28,000.00 per year. Desert Pines will assist intern in finding housing, health insurance, dues, fees and license, liability insurance, cell phone/pager, CE allowance, 7 vacation days, incentive bonus for emergency service.
The chosen applicant will have spent several days visiting the hospital as an extern or interested student.
